Sermon: Praying for the Glory of God John 17:1-3

Praying for the Glory of God John 17:1-3 Jesus prays that God would be glorified through the cross and the salvation of His people. Introduction From the beginning and throughout our Lord's mission on earth He demonstrated that He was continually in prayer. He prayed at His baptism (Luke 3.21), during His first preaching tou John 17:1-3. Jesus Prays to Be Glorified. 17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you. John 17:1-3. (1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: (2) As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him John 17:1-3. 17 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent God Is Working All Around John 17:1-3. INTRO.: Have you ever wanted to know God better and be sure He was working in your life? Most of us want this if we are serious about our Christianity. I was recently introduced to a book named Experiencing God written by Henry Blackaby and Claude King

Chuck Smith :: Sermon Notes for John 17:3 ← Back to Chuck Smith's Bio & Resources. I. AND THIS IS LIFE ETERNAL. A. Jesus has just declared that the Father has given Him the power to give eternal life to those that the Father has given to Him The verb, to give, occurs 17 times in Jesus' prayer in John 17 and more often in John than in any of the other gospels (Morris, p. 718, note 6). It puts the focus on God's grace. Then Jesus defines eternal life, drawing together verses 1 and 2 (John 17:3): This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus. The scripture references listed are for Ascension Day (May 13, 2021) and can be used for worship on May 16. These notes are based on the Gospel reading for Sunday, May 16: John 17:6-19. This prayer that John record is a prayer that Jesus prayed for his disciples. The part that includes us happens just after our text for this week John 17 is the holy of holies in Scripture, for it contains the greatest prayer every prayed on earth, by the greatest man who ever lived, and causes us to take off the shoes from off our feet.. for the place whereon we stand is holy. And within this sacred text we discover, from the prayerful lip of the Lord Jesus Himself, exactly what eternal.

From the moment that we accept Christ as our Saviour it is ours (John 10:27, 28; 1 John 5:13). II. THE LIFE IN WHICH SALVATION CONSISTS HAS ITS ROOT AND GROUND IN KNOWLEDGE John 12:23 But Jesus replied, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. John 13:31 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. John 13:32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify the Son in Himself--and will glorify Him at once. John 17: John 17:1-3 English Standard Version (ESV) The High Priestly Prayer. 17 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true.
